Priorities

As a longtime student of this fascinating field [of life and time management], I am personally persuaded that the essence of the best thinking in the area of time management can be captured in a single phrase: Organize and execute around priorities.” —Stephen R. Covey, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
It’s one thing to say something is important; it’s another to prioritize our life around it.
Feeling something and doing something about it are two separate things.
Get Better at What Matters most.
We need to understand what we are truly created to do.
Romans 12.1, NIV
1Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.
God plays the largest role in our lives, but we also have a part. Many are passively waiting for God to do his part while we neglect our role.
Matthew 22.34-40
34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this questi.on: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
Many times we wait for tragedy or a desperate situation to fully surrender to God.
Deuteronomy 6.1-9
1 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, 2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the Lord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.
4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. a 5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
Our faith is not a get-out hard things pass or an experience to make us feel good.
Our walk with Jesus should be our source for everything.
Think about the things we reorient our lives around, most are not bad things. Marriage, kids, getting in a workout, a good meal, etc.
Proverbs 3.3-6
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you;
bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
This is deeper than just telling people to love God more.
But we also need to learn not to settle along the way.
Avoid Consuming the Things of this World
We need to realize,
everything we feed on throughout our day will eventually be thought about.
Proverbs 4.23, ESV
23 Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Thank God for Everything
1 Thess 5.15-17, ESV
15 See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Ephesians 5.18-20
18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
