After Egypt Part 6 - Two Baptisms (Pentecost Sunday)

  • “Pentecostal” is a term that means -filled, because the early church was filled with the Spirit on the day of the Jewish Feast of Pentecost.

And they were

filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. —Acts 2:4

And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on

flesh. —Acts 2:17

This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—

who have been called by the Lord our God.” —Acts 2:39

  • 1 Corinthians 10:11 says “These things happened to them as examples for us.” Specifically, believers at the end of the age.

I don’t want you to forget, dear brothers and sisters, about our ancestors in the wilderness long ago. All of them were guided by a cloud that moved ahead of them, and all of them walked through the sea on dry ground. 2 In the cloud

in the sea, all of them were baptized as followers of Moses. —1 Corinthians 1:1-2

  • They were baptized into Moses, connected to Moses as their leader, in not just one way, but two ways.
  • And those two distinct baptisms show us the baptisms that we need in Christ.

1. There are distinct baptisms available for every believer: Water Baptism and Holy Spirit Baptism.

  • “In the Sea” - This pictures baptism, where we are buried with Christ, and rise again with Him.
  • “In the Cloud” - This pictures Baptism, the baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Water Baptism

18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. —Matthew 28:18-19

Holy Spirit Baptism

49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” —Luke 24:49

  • Endued - clothed, empowered, equipped, furnished.
  • Power, dunamis - Miraculous power, , abundance, strength.

4 And being assembled together with them, He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the Promise of the Father, “which,” He said, “you have heard from Me; 5 for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” —Acts 1:4-5, 8

  • Water Baptism identifies us with Jesus. Spirit Baptism us with Jesus’ power.
  • Water Baptism deals with the past - “I am crucified with Christ, nevertheless I live”. Spirit Baptism deals with the present and future. “The life I now live I live by the FAITH of the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me.” Galatians 2:20
  • Water Baptism frees me from the power and influence of the world. Spirit Baptism

us in the power and influence of heaven.

  • In Acts 1:8, notice that Jesus said you will BE my witnesses. In other words, this Baptism of the Holy Spirit is going to transform you.

2. Being Spirit-filled my mentality and attitude.

  • Jesus would not let the disciples have a poor-me mentality, self-pity, or to think like victims. He said you will receive power.

I can do all things through Christ Who strengthens me. —Philippians 4:13

  • One of the great

in our day, that every person will face is this: am I going to think like a victim, or am I going to think like an overcomer.

  • In Exodus 14:11, when they saw the Egyptians pursuing, they said “Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you so dealt with us, to bring us up out of Egypt?”

  • In Exodus 16:3, when they ran out of unleavened bread and supplies about one and a half months after leaving Egypt, they said, “Oh, that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and when we ate bread to the full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

  • The same thing happened in Exodus 17:3 when they ran out of water - “Why is it you have brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?”

  • The Holy Spirit takes us into the belief, thoughts, and language of I can. He moves us from I can’t to I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me!

The Holy Spirit helps us:

  • move from the language of excuses to the language of possibility.
  • from hopelessness to optimism.
  • move from helplessness to ability.

  • Being Spirit-filled, introduces us to a life of walking in the Spirit.

  • We often talk about talk about how speaking in tongues is an initial evidence of being baptized in the Holy Spirit, but it is also the ongoing way be filled with the Holy Spirit!
