The decisions you make today will determine the story you tell tomorrow.

Perhaps I will stay with you for a while, or even spend the winter, so that you can help me on my journey, wherever I go. 7 For I do not want to see you now and make only a passing visit; I hope to spend some time with you, if the Lord permits. 8 But I will stay on at Ephesus until Pentecost, 9 because a great door for effective work has opened to me, and there are many who oppose me. —1 Corinthians 16:6-9

The mind of a person plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. —Prov 16:9 NASB

God doesn’t always show us exactly what to do, but he will give us wisdom to decide.

Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment. —Proverbs 4:7 NLT

Practical steps to grow in wisdom…

  • Walk

Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm. —Proverbs 13:20

  • Ask

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. —James 1:5

  • Listen

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. —John 16:13

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.” —Psalm 32:8 NLT

  • Decide

Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. —Ecclesiastes 11:4

So when we could stand it no longer, we thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. —1 Thessalonians 3:1

Let’s Connect

What’s your last decision you can remember, big or small? How did you make it?

Let’s Talk About It

Every decision you make today will determine the story you tell tomorrow. But how do you know for sure you’re making the right decision? God doesn’t always show you exactly what to do, but He will give you wisdom to discern the best decision to make. To take practical steps in God’s divine direction, surround yourself with wise people, ask God for wisdom to discern, listen for His guidance, and then trust him to make your best decision.

1 Corinthians 16:6-9; Proverbs 16:9; 2 Chronicles 1:6-12; Proverbs 4:7; Proverbs 13:20; James 1:5; John 16:13; Psalm 32:8; 1 Thessalonians 3:1

  • Which part of the message made an impact, caught your attention or challenged you?

  • Read 1 Corinthians 16:6-9 and Proverbs 16:9. Do you ever ask God for direction? What happens? In retrospect, how do you determine if a decision you made was a good one or bad a bad one?

  • Read John 16:3. Discuss the practical steps to grow in wisdom: walk, ask, listen, and decide. Which is most challenging for you? Why? What can you do to grow in this area?

  • Read Proverbs 4:7 and Proverbs 13:20. Where do you need God’s wisdom right now? How have you seen the people in your life influence your decision-making? How will you find the right people so you can make wise decisions?

  • Read Psalm 32:8. Do you think like this? What role does God play in your decisions? How can you grow and take steps to embrace God as a loving, ever-present guide who desires the absolute best for your life?

Here’s My Prayer

God, thank You for providing me with the wisdom to discern Your will. As I make decisions, provide me with people to walk with, the confidence to ask You, the patience to listen and the trust to bravely decide. You’re such a good Father. In Jesus’ name, amen.
