ICEBREAKER: Share a time you had what you thought was a great idea, but it didn’t work out the way you had hoped?

This week’s sermon focused on Genesis 16, where Sarai and Abram tried to help bring about God’s promises through Hagar, Sarai’s servant.

Read Galatians 4:21-31

In this passage, Paul is building a contrast between salvation through works of the law and salvation through faith. Why does he focus on Hagar and Sarah, Ishmael, and Isaac? These events in Abraham’s life all happened before the Law was given to the people of Israel. Why does this comparison work?

Abraham is often cited as an example of a faithful person. The Hagar and Ishmael account doesn’t show a great example of faith. Why do you think the writer of Genesis included this story? How does seeing someone grow in faith encourage your faith? How have your past failures transformed your faith today? How can those struggles help others?

How can we pray for one another this week?
