James 4 - Speaking Evil and Dealing With Evil
11 Don’t speak

against each other, dear brothers and sisters.
If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law.

But your job is to

the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.
12 God alone, who gave the law, is the Judge.
He alone has the power to save or to destroy.
So what right do you have to your neighbor?

Luke 18
11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like

people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for

am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

Guzik: Speak evil translates the ancient Greek word katalalia. “Katalalia is the sin of those who meet in corners and gather in little groups and pass on confidential information which destroy the good name of those who are

there to defend themselves.” (Barclay)

Speaking Truth Is Speaking God’s Way - we do have responsibility to speak about evil.
Matt. 7 - Don’t judge. Also, discern and differentiate
“Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. 2 For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.

3 “And why worry about a speck in your friend’s eye when you have a log in your own? 4 How can you think of saying to your friend, ‘Let me

you get rid of that speck in your eye,’ when you can’t see past the log in your own eye?
5 Hypocrite! First get rid of the log in own eye;
then you will well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.

6 “Don’t waste what is

on people who are unholy. Don’t throw your pearls to pigs! They will trample the pearls, then turn and attack .

Matthew 13 - Pearls and the Kingdom of Heaven
45 “Again, the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant on the lookout for choice pearls. 46 When he discovered a pearl of great value, he sold everything he owned and bought it!

Matthew 18 - Personal Process
15 “If another believer

against you, go privately and point out the offense. If the other person listens and confesses it, you have won that person back. 16 But if you are unsuccessful, take one or two others with you and go back again, so that everything you say may be by two or three witnesses. 17 If the person still refuses to listen, take your case to the . Then if he or she won’t accept the church’s decision, treat that person as a or a corrupt tax collector.

1 Tim. 5 - Everyone Is Accountable
19 Do not listen to an accusation against an elder unless it is confirmed by two or three witnesses. 20 Those who sin should be reprimanded in front of the

church; this will serve as a strong to others.

Titus 3 - No Splitting Up The Family
9 Do not get involved in foolish discussions about spiritual pedigrees or in quarrels and fights about obedience to Jewish laws. These things are useless and a waste of time. 10 If people are causing

among you, give a first and second warning. After that, have more to do with them. 11 For people like that have turned from the truth, and their sins condemn them.

1 Cor. 6 - Wisdom, Discernment, Judgment and Peace
When one of you has a dispute with another believer, how dare you file a lawsuit and ask a secular court to decide the matter instead of taking it to other

! 2 Don’t you realize that someday we believers will the world? And since you are going to judge the world, can’t you decide even these things among yourselves? 3 Don’t you realize that we will judge ? So you should surely be able to resolve disputes in this life. 4 If you have legal disputes about such matters, why go to outside judges who are not respected by the church? 5 I am saying this to shame you. Isn’t there in all the church who is enough to decide these issues?
6 But instead, one believer sues another—right in front of unbelievers!
7 Even to have such lawsuits with one another is a for you. Why not just accept the injustice and leave it at that? Why not let yourselves be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves are the ones who do and cheat even your fellow believers.

Instead - that is to say, BECAUSE we refuse God’s wisdom, WE ARE THE ONES CHEATING and DOING WRONG. When we exempt the wisdom of God from ANY interaction with one another, we are cheating them out of God’s best and we are doing wrong.

James 3 (NIV) Pearls, Wisdom, Value, Fruit
17 But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. 18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.

1 Cor. 5.1-13 Case Study and Spiritual Authority
I can hardly believe the report about the sexual immorality going on among you—something that even pagans don’t do. I am told that a man in your church is living in sin with his stepmother. 2 You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be

in sorrow and shame. And you should this man from your fellowship.

3 Even though I am not with you in person, I am with you in the Spirit. And as though I were there, I have

passed judgment on this man 4 in the of the Lord Jesus.
You must call a meeting of the church. I will be present with you in spirit, and so will the of our Lord Jesus. 5 Then you must throw this man and hand him over to Satan so that his sinful nature will be destroyed and he himself will be on the day the Lord returns.

9 When I wrote to you before, I told you not to associate with people who indulge in sexual sin. 10 But I wasn’t talking about

who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to this world to avoid people like that. 11 I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even with such people.

12 It isn’t my responsibility to judge

, but it certainly is your responsibility to judge those the church who are sinning. 13 God will judge those on the outside; but as the Scriptures say, “You must the evil person from among you.”
