John 11:1-37

11:1-15 | Why would Jesus not rush to Bethany? Jesus’ plan made no sense by human standards, but His friends would have to trust Him - for the timing and the outcome. Sometimes God asks His followers to walk by a different light source than that of their limited human judgment.

11:11-13 | The word sleep in the NT is often a euphemism for death (1 Cor. 11:30).

11:14-15 | Jesus was continually teachinga nd preparing the disciples for life after He was gone. The healing of Lazarus did result in greater faith among them. In all circumstances - even in times of waiting - believers should interpret circumstances by the love of Christ rather than trying to interpret Christ’s love by the circumstances.

11:17-19 | Lazarus had been in the tomb four days. No one had any doubt that he was dead; the family’s comforters had already gathered.

11:20-32 | Martha and Mary evidenced similar faith in Jesus’ friendship (hurry to meet Him) and in His power over sickness- had He arrived before Lazarus died. They were soon to discover His pwer over death, not just in the last day but in that moment in time. He is ever the resurrection and the life.

11:32-36 | The word translated troubled means “to shake with emotion.” When Jesus saw the tears of Mary and her friends, He wept, responding both physically and emotionally as He identified with their sorry. The Lord sees and feels the anguish of God’s people when their loved ones die (Job 34:28; Ps. 6:8; 9:12: 34:15).
