Rooted - Week 5

Wednesday Night – Fill-In Notes 9.22.21

Scripture: Romans 2:17-29
“But if you call yourself a Jew and rely on the law and boast in God and know his will and approve what is excellent, because you are instructed from the law; and if you are sure that you yourself are a guide to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of children, having in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— you then who teach others, do you not teach yourself? While you preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that one must not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.” For circumcision indeed is of value if you obey the law, but if you break the law, your circumcision becomes uncircumcision. So, if a man who is uncircumcised keeps the precepts of the law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision? Then he who is physically uncircumcised but keeps the law will condemn you who have the written code and circumcision but break the law. For no one is a Jew who is merely one outwardly, nor is circumcision outward and physical. But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

Big Thought (Summary): Salvation is a heart issue and cannot be earned by doing good works. But, good works will come from a person who has been redeemed by God through Christ. True faith in God is required for fruitful obedience to God.

V. 17-20

Boast: To say anything about yourself in a proud way.

The Jews:
    1. Were proud of being God’s chosen people (the title)
    2. Were proud that God gave them the law
    3. Thought that they had favor with God and were therefore exempt from his wrath because of having these things, but they were wrong

Quote: “The law is actually beneficial if followed but it was never meant to save and is not capable of saving.”

Benefits of the Jews:
    • Their title (“Jew” from “Judah” meaning, Yahweh be praised)
    • They were given the law
    • They had a special relationship with God (covenant, blessings and curses)
    • They knew God’s will
    • They had the privilege of sharing the hope of God with the nations

V. 21-24

Main Point 1: Salvation is a

issue and is not earned by doing good works.

    - Isaiah 52:5

Main Point 2: Claiming to be a Christ-follower and then living a life of (unrepentant) sin is

for you and for those around you.

Quote: “The main problem is always with us (sin) and never with God or His word.”

V. 25-29

Circumcision: The sign that God gave to His people of His covenant promise.

Main Point 3:

obedience comes from a heart surrendered to Jesus Christ.

SGQ’s (MS):

    1. Why did the Jews believe they were special and exempt from God’s judgement?

    2. How did the Jews believe they were saved/made right with God?
       a. How are we actually able to be saved?

    3. What do we do when someone says they are a Christian and do not act like it?

    4. What happens if we are a Christian and sin?

SGQ’s (HS):

    1. Circumcision was the sign of the old covenant. What is the sign of the new covenant? How is this different?

    2. Were OT believers (before the cross) saved in a different way than we are today (post-cross)?

    3. What are things we are tempted to boast about other than Christ?
       a. How is this linked to how we see ourselves?
       b. Does the way we see ourselves affect our behavior?
       c. How do we remind ourselves of who we truly are?
