Kingdom Prayers

Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. 10 May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. —Matthew 6:9-10

“May your Kingdom come soon, on earth, as it is in heaven.”

The petition here is that God may “reign” everywhere; that His laws may be obeyed; and especially that the gospel of Christ may be advanced everywhere, until the world shall be filled with his glory. —Albert Barnes

Big Idea: A Kingdom prayer is not about me!
Big Question: What does a Kingdom prayer look like?
Main Scripture: 1 Timothy 2:1-6

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 3 This is good and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 5 For, there is one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. 6 He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time. —1 Timothy 2:1-6

What does a Kingdom prayer look like?
1.) Seeking God for the needs of others

To clasp the hands in prayer is the beginning of an uprising against the disorder of the world. —Karl Barth

Prayer is the means by which we push back the curse that’s infected the world and infected us. —Tyler Staton

What does a Kingdom prayer look like?
1.) Seeking God for the needs of others
2.) Standing in the gap for the souls of others

There is one great Intercessor between God and man, who pleads for our salvation on the ground of what He Himself has done, but we are permitted to intercede for others as well. It is a profound privilege to be permitted to plead for the salvation of our fellow-men. —Albert Barnes

What does a Kingdom prayer look like?
1.) Seeking God for the needs of others
2.) Standing in the gap for the souls of others
3.) Surrendering our lives for the sake of others

To pray “Your Kingdom come” is not language of passivity (i.e., “God, there’s nothing we can do, please fix this world.”) This is language of participation (i.e., “God, there’s much we can do, but only in your power.”). —Rich Villodas

A life of faith without mercy is a kingdom our King doesn’t recognize. It’s impossible to know God through private prayer without equally participating with God in public mercy. —Tyler Staton

We can only pray this prayer for the church if we are prepared to mean: make us Kingdom-bearers! Make us a community of healed healers; make us a returned orchestra to play the Kingdom-music until the world takes up the song. —N.T. Wright
