1 Corinthians 13:1-3
1If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.
Operating in the Christian life without love is nothing.
If I speak with the tongues of men and angels
If I have the gift of prophecy
If I understand all mysteries and knowledge
If I have faith to move mountains
If I deliver up my body to be burned
Religious devotion without love is just paganism dressed up in Christian clothes.
Love is patient…
Love is kind… Kind = Considerate
Love does not envy or boast…
To not envy means you have the ability to rejoice when someone else is blessed in a way that you wish you were.
How do you handle yourself in success?
Love rejoices in others blessing even when you’re not experiencing blessing; and love remembers those who don’t have when you walk in blessing.
Love is not arrogant or rude…
Dishonoring
Love is not irritable…
Self-centered
Love is not resentful (keeps no record of wrongs)…
Love does not rejoice in evil but delights in the truth…
Love bears all things…
Love believes all things and hopes all things…
Love endures all things.
Love like this has to be received before its demonstrated.
Paul wasn’t so much describing love as an action he was describing love as a person, and that person is Jesus.
Jesus is patient and Jesus is kind
Jesus does not envy Jesus does not boast
Philippians 2:6-8
6He who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to cling to, 7rather, he made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross.
Jesus was not arrogant or rude
Jesus is not irritable
Jesus keeps no record of wrongs.
Psalms 103:12 as far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
Jesus does not rejoice in evil but Jesus delights in the truth.
Jesus bore all things, believed all things, hoped all things and endured all things.
Jesus never fails.
1 Corinthians 13:8-13
8…But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. 9For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears. 11When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. 12For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. 13And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.
- The truth of the Gospel is you can’t produce this kind of love in yourself, but you can receive it and reflect it.
