MAIN IDEA:

We do not honor people because THEY are honorable…

we honor people because God has asked US to be honorable…

5th Commandment
Exodus 20:12
“Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (IE. remaining as a people in God’s covenant) NLT

IMPORTANT LESSON ABOUT HONOR:

When we take care of things God cares about, He takes care of things we care about…

Matthew 15:3-6
(Jesus asked why his disciples aren’t stricter with the traditions) 3 Jesus replied, “And why do you, by your traditions, violate the direct commandments of God? 4 For instance, God says, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[a] and ‘Anyone who speaks disrespectfully of father or mother must be put to death.’[b] 5 But you say it is all right for people to say to their parents, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you. For I have vowed to give to God what I would have given to you.’ 6 In this way, you say they don’t need to honor their parents.[c] And so you cancel the word of God for the sake of your own tradition.

Matthew 25:37-40; 45
37 “Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[f] you were doing it to me!’… 45 “And he will answer, ‘I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.’

TAKE AWAY:

Honor means treating people with value even if others don’t view them as valuable.

Make an effort towards others even when there is no benefit for you.

Mark 6:1-5
1 Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown. 2 The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked, “Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?” 3 Then they scoffed, “He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him. 4 Then Jesus told them, “A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.” 5 And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them. NLT

Definition:

Honor - Value, Worth, Respect

Dishonor- Cheapen, Devalue, Expendable, Take Lightly

Romans 12:10
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. NLT

Honoring someone DOES NOT mean:

• Keep yourself in an abusive situation
• Compromising your ethics and integrity
• Keep quiet and never confront the situation

Honoring DOES mean:

• Being respectful to the position even if the person does not deserve it
• Not being vengeful or lashing out in a demeaning tone.
• Acting Christ-like at ALL times

MAIN IDEA:

We do not honor people because THEY are honorable…

we honor people because God has asked US to be honorable…

THEREFORE:

Create a culture of honor in your home, church, workplace, and friendships
