Being Familiar with the Unfamiliar

Introduction: Priming the pump for tonight’s discussion.
Let’s begin with our own observations. Was there a moment where God spoke to you, showed you something new, or reminded you of a familiar truth through the message this week?

Exploration: Questions to guide our group discussion.

  1. The disciples were in Galilee waiting on Jesus. They decided to go fishing (v.1-3). The significance of Galilee and familiarity play an important role in their lives. What do you do when you are waiting on Jesus? Where is your familiar place and what do you like to do? Which scriptures do you go to in times of trial?

  2. Jesus commanded them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. He used Children. Read John 1:12 again. Reflect on what it means to be a child of God. Also, remember they heard a familiar voice commanding them. What do God’s children do?

  3. John was the first to recognize Jesus, but Peter was the first to respond (v. 7-8). What has been your response in the past to hearing Jesus’ voice? Discuss times of obedience, delayed obedience, and/ or disobedience.

  4. Ultimately this text is about familiarity of the Savior, but not knowing what’s next (unfamiliarity). Jesus purpose is for the disciples to become fishers of men (a part of their new identity). Knowing this, how have you responded in the past to fishing for people? God provides the fish… are you participating in the fishing? The unknown can be intimidating, how has faith played a part in your life to witness?

Additional Scriptures for Deeper Study:

Luke 5: 4-7
Matthew 4:18-22

Application: How can I apply this to my life this week?
We have those moments of let down in life. What steps can you take to come back to the throne of Grace?
