INTRODUCTION

A. Let’s Go! is a phrase we use for someone who is not moving. It is a statement that causes us to get up, get out and get going. Haggai, a prophet in the Old Testament, had to mobilize the people of Israel to get their priorities right. The people of Israel had stopped focusing on God’s agenda, and instead they began to focus on their own agenda.

B. Haggai teaches us about having the right priorities. He served as a megaphone for God to help Israel recharge and realign themselves to God’s priorities. God has a way of awakening lethargic, discouraged, disinterested followers to motivate them to follow Him again. God used Haggai to wake up His people from a spiritual slumber. Haggai helped the people keep their eyes and focus on the bigger picture.

C. In this little book, we have four messages from Haggai, and each message has a specific strategy to motivate God’s people. In each message, Haggai points out a particular sin that keeps us from accomplishing and finishing God’s work.

D. In this collection of talks we will focus on 5 strategies that help us stay focused on God’s work and the mission at hand.

Text: Haggai 2:10-23 (CSB, Old Testament)

Today’s Takeaway: When we confess our sin, God’s blessings move in.

Two words Haggai wants the people to think about:

I. SIN IN YOUR LIFE (2:10–19)

A. Sin was

in the people’s lives (2:10–17)

We must draw a for sin in our lives (2:10–13)

1. God’s question for the people (2:10–12)

Q: Is holiness contagious?
A: No, impurity of the heart is.

2. God’s

question for the people (2:13)

Q: Can I become defiled by contact with an unholy person, place, or thing?
A: Yes!

B. Their sin needed to be

(2:18–19)

LIFE APPLICATION #1: Beware of the sins that hinder the work of the Lord.

What should we be on guard for?

  1. Putting self before God.
  2. Looking back instead of ahead.
  3. Having unconfessed sin and unbelief.

II. HIS KINGDOM WITH OUR LIVES (2:20–23)

A. God gave Zerubbabel

to finish the temple, but something better is coming from God.

  1. This will happen after the great

    (2:20–22)

“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah, saying, I am about to shake the heavens and the earth…” —Haggai 2:21
“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” —Matthew 24:29
“…people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken.” —Luke 21:26

  2. This will happen during the glorious

    (2:23)

“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he threw him into the abyss, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he would not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were completed; after these things he must be released for a short time.” —Revelation 20:1-3

B. God gave His Son, Jesus Christ,

authority to save the lost and build His ultimate temple, the Church body.

“Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent —Jesus Christ.” —John 17:1–3

LIFE APPLICATION #2: Hold on to the wonderful promises God gives us.

God’s promises found in the message of Haggai:

  1. “I am with you” (1:13)
  2. “Fear not” (2:5)
  3. “I will bless you” (2:19)
  4. “I have chosen you” (2:23)

Haggai shares with us five practical lessons for God’s people to live with:

  1. When God’s people proclaim God’s Word in the power of the Spirit, things
    happen.

  2. God’s servants must work in unity with the Lord to complete His task.
    (1 Cor. 3:9)

  3. Apart from God’s promises, we have no hope.

  4. Confessing sin and putting God first brings God’s best blessing.
    (Matthew 6:33)

  5. Apart from the power of the Holy Spirit, our labor is in vain. (Phil. 2:13)

CONCLUSION: What work has God called you to do before Christ returns?

“I am sure of this, that he who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.“ —Philippians 1:6

DEEP DIVE QUESTIONS

  1. Pastor Gary talked about eliminating sin from our lives. What sin did the people of Israel have to confess before they saw God’s blessings? What sin do you have to confess in my life to see God’s blessings?

  2. Review and discuss the 4 promises of God found in the book of Haggai. How do they give you hope today?

  3. How can we elevate God’s kingdom with our lives?

  4. Review the 5 practical lessons for our lives found in Haggai. How can we apply these lessons to our lives and church?
