Why do we sing?
When We Gather
March 12, 2023
1Therefore, I urge you in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, this is your true and proper worship. —Romans 12:1
Take your everyday, ordinary life, your sleeping, eating, going to work, and walking around life, and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him.
“Singing to God can be a part of our worship,
but it was never meant to be the heart of worship. —BOB KAUFLIN
- SINGING HELPS US REFLECT ON GOD’S GLORY
14Because of God’s mighty power against Pharaoh and his army, the Israelites worshiped by giving God glory and placed their trust in him. —Exodus 14:31
We will sing to the Lord for His greatness. Lord you are our strength and the One who saved us. The Lord is a fighter, he has thrown Pharaoh and his army into the sea. You are great in power. Who is like you among the gods, O Lord? Who is like you, great and holy, praised in fear, doing powerful works? You have led us with loving-kindness into freedom. —Exodus 15
Remember those walls that we called sin and shame? They were like prisons that we couldn’t escape, Those walls are rubble now.
Who pulled me out of that pit? He did! Who paid for all of our sin? Nobody but Jesus!
Who rescued me from that grave? Yahweh! Who gets the glory and praise? Nobody but Jesus!
” —PSALM 29
” —LUKE 1
” —REVELATION 4
2.SINGING HELPS US REMEMBER GOD’S WORD
54I set your instructions to music and sing
them as I walk along this journey. —Psalm 119:5416Let the word of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. —Colossians 3:16
3.SINGING HELPS US TO RESPOND TO GOD’S GRACE
Sing praises to his name. Celebrate and worship with all your heart. Trust in his mighty power, worship him always. The Lord does marvelous things! He deserves our greatest praise! He is the only God worthy
of our worship. Praise the Lord for his goodness to us. —Excerpts from 1 Chronicles 16Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
His love endures forever!
To God alone who does great wonders.
His love endures forever!
To the God who created heaven and earth.
His love endures forever!
To the God who divided the sea and provided an escape.
His love endures forever!
To the God who remembered us in our low estate.
His love endures forever!
To the God who set us free.
His love endures forever!
To the God who provides.
His love endures forever!
Give thanks to the Lord for
His love endures forever! —Psalm 136
4.SINGING HELPS US TO REORIENTATE OUR LIVES
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
let us exalt his name together. —Psalm 34:3O soul, are you weary and troubled?
No light in the darkness you see?
There’s light for a look at the Savior,
And life is more abundant and free!
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth
will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace. —Helen Lemmel
5.SINGING HELPS US TO RALLY ONE ANOTHER, AS WE REINFORCE #1…TO REFLECT GOD’S GLORY.
Don’t be drunk with wine instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs among yourselves, making music to the Lord in your hearts. Give God thanks for everything. —Ephesians 5:18-20
