4. The Prefiguring Of Atonement
- Every Old Testament sacrifice was a temporary, symbolic ritual picturing the ultimate, actual, and efficacious sacrifice of Christ for our sins.
- While the blood offering was a picture of the atoning work of Christ, one special day was set aside each year to focus Israel’s faith on their need for atonement and the perfect atonement which would be provided by the coming Messiah. This day is known as Yom Kippur or the Day of Atonement.
- Some of the aspects of this day that have special significance in prefiguring the atoning work of Christ are as follows:
1) The blood of one sacrifice was shed for the entire nation (rather than for a single individual) – prefiguring the death of Christ for the nation of Israel and the entire
. (Heb. 2:9)
2) The blood of this one sacrifice was taken to the Holy of Holies to be sprinkled on the Mercy Seat of the Ark of the Covenant. This prefigured Christ ascending to heaven to the very throne of God to offer His blood to the Father. The acceptance of Christ’s sacrifice by the Father as full payment for sin guaranteed our salvation. (Heb. 9:23-25)
3) The blood of this one sacrifice provided atonement (the temporary forbearance of God) for an entire year (rather than for a single sin). This prefigured the permanent atonement provided by the once for all time sacrifice of Christ. (Heb. 9:26-28)
5. The Blessings Of Atonement
1) The guilt of sin is covered.
2) The condemnation for our sin is removed.
3) The penalty of sin is
paid.
4) The punishment of sin is fully complete.
5) The substitutionary atonement literally makes possible every other aspect and blessing of salvation. Note these examples:

6. The Foundational Nature Of Blood Atonement
- The Substitutionary Atonement of Christ is one of the most fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith.
- If you do not believe and adhere to the substitutionary blood atonement, you cannot be a Christian.
- You won’t just be a part of another denomination or liberal in theology, you will not be a Christian. To deny the substitutionary blood atonement of Jesus is to deny the very cause of Christ in salvation.
