Ps. 11
Vs. 1 This is God, but vs. 2 the wicked are here
Right away the wicked are attacking
Lord’s location
Temple
Not trapped in there
He has come near
God will ultimately sort the world
Process - the righteous will be tested
And those who love violence, the wicked are hated
Upright will see his face
Ps. 27
Similar opening
Different tone
PS 11 - statements
27 - cries out to God
Again, his hope is in reality that YHWH is in the temple
Close by - and that he can go there and will be protected
See God’s beauty
Inquire there - ask for God’s will
Once again, we have this desire to see God’s face
Intimacy, know God
Now, a lot has happened since David wrote these
But,
How hard it is out there
Privately and pubic
Wickedness is real, violence is real
God’s location and His face
This is what gave confidence
Wait? We don’t have a temple!
It would be nice to go to place
But then you’d have to leave
David wanted to dwell there all the days of his life, but he couldn’t
Also, asking to see God’s face is a big ask
Moses
In Christ, we have something better
Christ, our Temple
Christ, God’s face
Christ, on the Throne
We are hidden in Christ
Vs. 27:4
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock. —Ps 27:4-5
He has us, we are protected
He knows us, we are with him
He hears us, we can inquire
He has restored us, we can see His beauty
Our foundation is firm
if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” —Ps. 11:3
Isn’t that the question, we can fix all the other stuff
But if the foundations wash out, it all falls over
We can take confidence in the midst of hardship, because we have such a sure foudation
We can take heart
