STEP 2: Discover Purpose and Make a Difference

In Step Two, we’ll talk about making a difference in the world around you through serving. We will discuss how to connect to the opportunities available at Celebration to live out your purpose and serve others by using your God-given gifts.

Discover Purpose

THE GREAT COMMANDMENT

He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” —Luke 10:27 (NIV)

THE GREAT COMMISSION

‘Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.’ —Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

The Purposes of God For Our Lives

God.

“I ask - ask the God of our Master, Jesus Christ, the God of glory - to make you intelligent and discerning in knowing him personally, your eyes focused and clear, so that you can see exactly what it is he is calling you to do, grasp the immensity of this glorious way of life he has for his followers.” —Ephesians 1:17-18 (MSG)

Each of you has received a gift to use to serve others. Be good servants of God’s various gifts of grace. —1 Peter 4:10 (NCV)

And all of this is a gift from God, who brought us back to himself through Christ. And God has given us this task of reconciling people to him. —2 Corinthians 5:18 (NLT)

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. —Acts 2:46-47 (NIV)

Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family, citizens of God’s country, and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian. —Ephesians 2:19 (LB)

We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, than give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. —Romans 12:6-8

IT’S ALL MINISTRY

Acts 6:1-7
1 But as the believers rapidly multiplied, there were rumblings of discontent. The Greek-speaking believers complained about the Hebrew-speaking believers, saying that their widows were being discriminated against in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve called a meeting of all the believers. They said, “We apostles should spend our time teaching the word of God, not running a food program. 3 And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility. 4 Then we apostles can spend our time in prayer and teaching the word.” 5 Everyone liked this idea, and they chose the following: Stephen (a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit), Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas of Antioch (an earlier convert to the Jewish faith). 6 These seven were presented to the apostles, who prayed for them as they laid their hands on them. 7 So God’s message continued to spread. The number of believers greatly increased in Jerusalem, and many of the Jewish priests were converted, too. (NLT)

  • They didn’t separate the importance of the natural needs from the spiritual needs.

Why do we say “it’s all ministry”?

  1. Every act of serving impacts the church experience of someone who will come to Christ.

  2. When we serve others, we are serving Jesus.

    • Matthew 25:40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ (NIV)
  3. When we serve others we represent Jesus and His church.

    • 1 Corinthians 12:18 But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired. (NASB)
