John 14:12-31
14:13-14 | Jesus was not saying that whatever Christians ask for, they will get. Believers must ask in Jesus’ name. The purpose of prayer is that the Father may be glorified - these are the prayers that get answered. As James says, Christians must learn to say, “if the Lord wills” (James 4:15).
14:16-18 | Jesus promised to not leave His disciples as orphans; He would supply another Helper (“one who comes alongside”) In the Holy Spirit, Jesus would permanently be present with His followers.
14:19-20 | Jesus would leave the disciples soon and be crucified and buried. But He would come to them again- alive. After seeing the risen Christ, these men would know the truth about Jesus and their relationship with Him: Becasue I live, you will live also.
14:21-23 | Love for Christ is demonstrated by keeping His commandments. Obedience flowing from love is very different from obedience performed out of obligation. Jesus promises His presence (manifest Myself to Him) as people join Him in His work.
14:27 | Jesus tells His disciples here and in verse 1 not to be troubled. Trusting Him does not mean that all of life’s circumstances change for the better, but that His followers will have peace as they endure trials and difficulties.
14:30 | The ruler of this world is Satan. The expression he has nothing in me means that there was no handle by which Satan could get a hold on Jesus or induce Him to sin. Satan needs fertile territory in which to do his greatest damage. And whenever Christians have an area of themselves that they have not given to God, they give Satan a handle by which he can do his work (Eph. 4:27).
