Romans (Part 46) - Contrary to the Doctrine
[Romans 16:17-20 ESV]
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them.
18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.
19 For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.
20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
I appeal to you…
[Romans 12:1 ESV]
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.
[Romans 11:36 ESV]
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… brothers…
If you are in Christ, you are called to this!
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out…
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… avoid them.
WHO?
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught…
[Romans 16:18 ESV]
… such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites…
[Romans 16:18 ESV]
… they deceive the hearts of the naive.
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… those who cause divisions…
[Galatians 5:19-21 ESV]
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
[Proverbs 6:16-19 ESV]
There are six things that the LORD hates, seven that are an abomination to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, 19 a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.
[Titus 3:10-11 ESV]
As for a person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, 11 knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.
[Ephesians 4:2-3 ESV]
with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, 3 eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
WATCH OUT… AVOID those who cause DIVISION.
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… create obstacles
[Romans 16:17 ESV]
… contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught…
[Galatians 1:6-9 ESV]
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel– 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.
[2 John 1:9-10 ESV]
Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting,
[Jude 1:3-4 ESV]
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. 4 For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were designated for this condemnation, ungodly people,
who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny
our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
[1 Timothy 1:3-4 ESV]
As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith.
[1 Timothy 1:18-19 ESV]
This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith,
[1 Timothy 6:3-5 ESV]
If anyone teaches a different doctrine and does not agree with the sound words of our Lord Jesus Christ and the teaching that accords with godliness, 4 he is puffed up with conceit and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy craving for controversy and for quarrels about words, which produce envy, dissension, slander, evil suspicions, 5 and constant friction among people who are depraved in mind and deprived of the truth, imagining that godliness is a means of gain.
WATCH OUT… AVOID those who create OBSTACLES.
[Romans 16:18 ESV]
… such persons do not serve our Lord Christ,
but their own appetites…
[Galatians 5:19-21 ESV]
Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21 envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
[Romans 16:18 ESV]
… they deceive the hearts of the naive.
HOW?
[Romans 16:18 ESV]
… by smooth talk and *flattery * they deceive the hearts of the naive.
WATCH OUT… AVOID those who use SMOOTH TALK and FLATTERY to DECEIVE.
[Romans 16:19 ESV]
For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.
[John 14:15 ESV]
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
[Romans 6:20-23 ESV]
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. 21 But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. 22 But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
[Romans 16:20 ESV]
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.
How do you stay on course, guarding your faith from shipwreck?
How do you know WHO to WATCH OUT for and AVOID?
FRUIT
[Matthew 7:15-16 ESV]
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits…
