The Art of being Unordinary
D.L. Moody

Dear, dear Corinthians, I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively!

—2 Corinthians 6:11-13 (MSG)

Jesus has power that began but continues.

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began ….

—Acts 1:1 a (ESV)

(Romans 15:18,19 NIV)
I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done—

—Romans 15:18 (NIV)

Are you yielding to the power of God?

Jesus has power by doing and teaching.

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach,

—Acts 1:1 (ESV)

I will not venture to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me in leading the Gentiles to obey God by what I have said and done— by the power of signs and miracles, through the power of the Spirit.

—Romans 15:18,19a (NIV)

For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.

—1 Corinthians 4:20 (NLT)

My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power,

—1 Corinthians 2:4 (NIV)

So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum, I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ;

—Romans 15:19b (NIV)

Are you expecting the power of God?

Jesus has power through the Holy Spirit.

In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.

—Acts 1:2b (ESV)

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

—Acts 10:38 (ESV)

I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.

—John 14:12 (NIV)

But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor [Holy Spirit] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

—John 16:7 (NIV)

Are you seeking the power of God?

And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

—Acts 1:4,5 (ESV)

Too many Christians believe they can go without waiting.

I firmly believe that the moment our hearts are emptied of selfishness and ambition and self-seeking and everything that is contrary to God’s law, the Holy Spirit will come and fill every corner of our hearts; but if we are full of pride and conceit, ambition and self-seeking, pleasure and the world, there is no room for the Spirit of God. I also believe that many a man is praying to God to fill him, when he is full already with something else. Before we pray that God would fill us, I believe we ought to pray that He would empty us. There must be an emptying before there can be a filling; and when the heart is turned upside down, and everything that is contrary to God is turned out, then the Spirit will come. —D.L. Moody
