When they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd around them and some scribes arguing with them. When the whole crowd saw him, they were immediately overcome with awe, and they ran forward to greet him. He asked them, “What are you arguing about with them?” Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought you my son; he has a spirit that makes him unable to speak, and whenever it seizes him, it dashes him down, and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid, and I asked your disciples to cast it out, but they could not do so.” He answered them, “You faithless generation, how much longer must I be with you? How much longer must I put up with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood. It has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you are able to do anything, help us! Have compassion on us!” Jesus said to him, “If you are able! All things can be done for the one who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out, “I believe; help my unbelief!” —Mark 9:14-24

Our Dream is to Sing God’s Praises, Serve God’s Children, and Share God’s Salvation until Christ comes again.

Creed: a statement of the basic beliefs of a religion; an idea or set of beliefs that guides the actions of a person or group

What Is the Apostles’ Creed? It evolved from the ancient

formula –
the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”
The Apostles’ Creed can be traced to Rome and is than the Nicene Creed (325 A.D.).
The earliest form was interrogatory on the night before : Do you believe in …?
By the fourth century, the Creed was the high point of for baptism.
The purpose of the creed was to particular points of doctrine that were under attack.

Its purpose was to determine the identity of Christianity in the midst of the wide variety of religions, superstitions, and syncretistic belief systems circulating in the first centuries of the Christian era. —Prof. Justo González Ph.D, Historical Theology at Yale

The Apostles’ Creed focuses on the life of

, following a chronological order: “born…suffered…was crucified, dead, and buried…descended…rose…ascended…is seated…will come.”
At the time of the , Luther, Calvin, and the Church of England all affirmed the Apostle’s Creed.

It is not so much my statement of faith as it is a statement of the faith of the church through the centuries – a statement that shapes the identity of the church, much as the Pledge of Allegiance shapes the identity of the nation. —Justo González

What Christians Believe: Credo is the first word of the Apostles’ Creed in Latin meaning “I believe.”
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker (creator) of heaven and earth.
Planck, Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, and Galileo all maintained faith in both science and

.
The apostle Paul believed that the itself points to the existence of God. Romans 1:20
When we declare, “I believe in God,” we are not saying only that we believe God .

The main thrust is that we trust God for our lives, and also that it is in this God that we live and believe, that this God is both the foundation and the context of all our belief. —Justo González

In Roman society, the figure of a father was not so much loving as

.
The father of the family – paterfamilias – ruled over it as a including women, slaves, and grandchildren.
The father’s authority over his children until he decided to emancipate them regardless of age.

Why It Matters: I need to trust, to give thanks, to praise, and worship One

than myself.
We feel most alive, in the flow, and experience deep when we do God’s will.
We are more to and through God than we can ever imagine.
If God is “Father,” then humans are brothers and sisters and matter to God including us!
If God “created heaven and earth” and we are children, then we have a to care for it.
If God is “Almighty,” all-powerful and everywhere, we are never and ultimately .
If God is always with us, there is always . Romans 5:3-5

It reminds us of some of the central points of the gospel and invites us to count ourselves among the many throughout the generations who have expressed their faith in its words. —Justo González

Action Step: In what area do you need God to be “all powerful” over an earthly authority? Ask God.
