GATHERING TO PRAISE GOD Sunday, October 30, 2022

Prelude

Praise Song Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)

Welcome

The People Gather
Lord, we come before you in joy,
clothed in the majesty of your glory.
We come to sing your praises.
Like the myriad faithful of old,
we proclaim the Lamb to be worthy
of blessing, honor, and glory.
We fall down before you in worship. Amen!

Hymn Be Thou My Vision

The People Pray
Compassionate, glorious God, you hear our cries, and you see our struggles.
You witness our deeds and the words of our mouths.
Teach us your ways O Lord, that we might learn to love our neighbors.
As we gather here in the name of your Son, be with us we pray, that we may know the depth of your love, and embrace your grace. Amen.

The Word of God for the People of God

Scripture
James 1:19
Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry.

James 3:8-10
No one can tame the tongue, though. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we both bless the Lord and Father and curse human beings made in God’s likeness. 10 Blessing and cursing come from the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, it just shouldn’t be this way!

James 4:11
Brothers and sisters, don’t say evil things about each other. Whoever insults or criticizes a brother or sister insults and criticizes the Law. If you find fault with the Law, you are not a doer of the Law but a judge over it.

Memory Verse
Be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to anger. James 1:19

How do you sin with your words, how do you bring harm or do evil with your words?

What does it look like when you don’t have a tight rein on your words?

When you believe God would have you speak, how can you draw on God’s promised wisdom to help you choose your words wisely?

How can you always keep the power of your words in mind?

Your words, your tongue are a powerful weapon, or an instrument of healing and blessing. Which will it be for you?

How close are you to being a “blessing-only” person? How can you move further in that direction?
