Reflections on Sunday’s Sermon

Below is a reference to the section of the New City Catechism that we went over on Sunday:

The New City Catechism

Lord’s Day 16

What is Sin?
Sin is rejecting or ignoring God in the world he created, rebelling against him by living without reference to him, not being or doing what he requires in his law—resulting in our death and the disintegration of all creation. (1 John 3:4)

Scripture

Hebrews 7:20-25 - (English Standard Version)

20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him:

      “The Lord has sworn

and will not change his mind,

      ‘You are a priest forever.’”

22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant.

23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.

Understanding and Applying

  1. Jesus vs. the Levitical priesthood: Compare and contrast Jesus with the Levitical priests.

  2. Implications: What are the implications of Jesus’ priesthood (vv. 22, 24-25)?

    • Based on these implications, why can we have assurance or confidence regarding our salvation in Christ?

  3. Doctrine: In your own words, what is the passage saying about the source and the scope of our salvation (Romans 8:29-30)?

  4. Praise: How does the passage lead you to praise and long for Jesus (v. 25)?
