John 8:37-59

8:37 | One mark of a true believer is that Jesus’ words live within him or her. God’s Word either changes a person’s heart or causes internal conflict.

8:38-47 | Christians are given the Holy Spirit to become more like the Father (Gal. 5:22-23). However, those who belong to their father the devil manifest his traits. When Paul confronted the sorcerer Elymas, he declared him to be a “son of the devil.” He also called him enemy of all righteousness, perverting the straight ways of the Lord” (Acts 13:10). That is a perfect description of Satan, the maligner of God’s ways.

8:46 | Jesus challenged His critics to find even one area in which He had sinned, but they could not have done so truthfully. He truly was “a lamb without blemish and without spots” (1 Pet. 1:19).

8:49-59 | The Pharisees could not dismiss Jesus, even though they tried. Samaritan here means “heretic”; it is also a racial slur.
