Genesis 5:1-32

5:1 | ‘Book’ means a written record. It’s quite possible Adam wrote it and passed it to Noah. Adam could speak from the very beginning which means God made Adam intelligent and ready to communicate. That would challenge the fact that humans evolved from non-communicators to communicators. It means he was already likely able to read and write. The rest of us had to learn it as we developed because we were born as infants and not created as a grown human like Adam and Eve.

5:2 | Male and Female: Only a few chapters into all of Scripture and it speaks only of 2 genders and is reinforced throughout the rest of the Bible. It is also reinforced through science. (Science continues to back what Scripture says, especially through creation.)

5:3 | Begot means to bring into existence.

Common Question: Why did lifespans decrease significantly after the flood? Biological and environmental changes could have played a portion of this. Genes were not as pure either as they once had been. However, with a shorter lifespan, mankind realizes their own mortality. What would make us live our lives with greater purpose and urgancy for God? A shorter life… not feeling invincible. You will live your life differently if you realize you have only 60 years left rather than if you realize you have 600 years left.

5:5 | “And he died.” We will all face death and meet our Creator.

5:6-32 | There are no gaps in the geneologies. The Bible tells us when people were born and when they died which allows us to add up all the years throughout Scripture. Going from now back to Adam is just over 6,000 years. You cannot fit 1 million (or more) years into the Bible.

5:21-24 | Enoch loved God so much. God essentially gave him a free pass on death. Elijah was the only other human who did not experience death.

5:25-27 | Methuselah lived 969 years making him the oldest man to ever live. He was raised by Enoch and Noah was his grandson. He likely followed God and could have helped Noah build the ark. He would have died within a year prior to the flood.

**There was an Enoch in the line of Cain who was different than the Enoch in the line of Seth. There was a different Lamech in each lineage as well. Think of how many guys you know named Matt!!!
