God Never Said That Week 2, July 11, 2021, "Too Much To Handle," David Wheatley, Victory Christian Church
July 11, 2021

You hear… God will never give you more than you can handle.
God NEVER said that!

The verse that this misconception is taken from says:

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. —1 Corinthians 10:13 NIV

In this verse, Paul is not addressing tragedy; Paul is talking about temptation to engage in sinful behavior.

There is

a choice to not .

God does NOT tempt us. Temptation does not come from God.

13When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. —James 1:13-15 NIV

23“I have… been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. 24Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. 25Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, 26I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. 27I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. 28Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches.” —2 Corinthians 11:23-28

Don’t let the

of a storm fool you into believing the of God.

“In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. —Jonah 2:2 NIV

Sometimes God gives us

than we can handle.

  • So we encounter his presence
  • So we perceive his power

7Therefore, in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. 9But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. —2 Corinthians 12:7-10 NIV

This statement is untrue:
God will never give you more than YOU can handle

but we can make it true by just changing one word:
God will never give you more than HE can handle

37He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”

39Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” —Matthew 26:37-39 NIV

God will never give you more than HE can handle.
