King of the Jews
Dorset, Minnesota boasted of the youngest mayor in the country in 2015, 3-year-old James Tufts, whose name was drawn from the ballot bucket at the annual Taste of Dorset. Anyone can vote, but it will cost you $1. Like being “Mayor of Dorset”, many didn’t take “King of the Jews” seriously either. Pilate, Roman soldiers, and the Jewish people themselves all mocked Jesus and his royal claims mercilessly (Matthew 27:11,29,42; John 19:19).
“King of the Jews” Points to Three Facts About Jesus:
He’s the King of
“After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?’” —Matthew 2:1-2
God became human by being born as a tiny, helpless infant totally dependent on his parents.
“We do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are, yet he did not sin.” —Hebrews 4:15
Whatever trials and temptations you experience, Jesus understands.
“[Jesus], being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.” —Philippians 2:6-7
Jesus chose to be born as a commoner, with poor parents who escaped to Egypt due to King Herod’s threats.
Jesus lived as a single adult in a very family-oriented society. He lived a fulfilling life despite the fact that he never experienced marriage, sex, or having kids.
He’s the King of
“When King Herod heard this, he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him…Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” —Matthew 2:3, 13
“Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus…they did what your power and will decided beforehand should happen.” —Acts 4:27-28
God allowed and ordained evil to happen in order that a greater good would be accomplished. In his book Imprisoned with Isis: Faith in the Face of Evil, Petr Jasek tells the story of his imprisonment in Sudan after meeting with his fellow Christians. Petr believed that God was pruning him in order that he would bear greater fruit, as Jesus taught in John 15:2.
Job maintained his faith in the midst of severe trials and was rewarded later in his life (Job 42). Jesus instructs us to walk in his footsteps and serve with humility (Mark 10:42-44).
He’s the King of
“On coming to the house, [the Magi] saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.” —Matthew 2:11
Although valuable, myrrh is an interesting choice as a gift since it can be used as an anesthetic (Mark 15:23) or to embalm bodies (John 19:39).
Jesus is a king who was born to die! Psalm 22:16-18 prophesied that the Messiah would be crucified 700 years before crucifixion would be invented by the Persians. Jesus was willing to endure the most agonizing and humiliating death known to mankind because he loves you!
The Jews are the most hated people group in history, having been driven out of 79 nations. Six million were exterminated by Nazi Germany although they presented no significant threat and seldom fought back. Since World War II, Jews have been driven out of every Middle Eastern country.
Being ‘King of the Jews’ is not exactly an attractive or coveted title. Yet Jesus never disavowed that he is indeed a Jewish king (Luke 23:3). He was not ashamed to identify with the most hated people in history. He also loves you no matter what you’ve done or said or thought. He wants to be your Savior and friend for all eternity!
