All Because of Jesus

“And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” —Colossians 1:18-20

  1. What kind of board games did you play as a child? How are they similar and different to the board games of today?

  2. Read Colossians 1:18-20. What is the first thing that Paul says about Jesus’ relationship with the church?

  3. In the sermon, Pastor John mentioned that the head could be a source of growth or of guidance? What are some practical ways that Jesus is each of these in the life of the body, the church?

  4. Verse 18 states that Jesus is the beginning. This means that Jesus is the beginning of the new creation, the Church. In what ways has Jesus brought a “new beginning” in your life as a believer?

  5. What does it mean for you that Jesus is alive? What would it mean for you if Jesus had a tombstone that you could visit? (1 Corinthians 15:20; 1 Thessalonians 4:14)

  6. Verse 19 teaches that Jesus is fully God. Any teaching that diminishes any aspect of Christ—either his humanity or his divinity—is false teaching. Why is it so dangerous to diminish either the humanity or the divinity of Jesus?

  7. What does verse 20 teach us about the cross? What are examples in the world and in your life of strife and struggle? What relationships do you know need to be reconciled by Jesus?

  8. Pastor John said that because Jesus was forsaken on the cross, we can know that we will never be. How does Romans 8:37-39 illustrate this truth? How does this truth encourage you?

Close in prayer.
