John 1:1-18

1:1-3 | Jesus Christ is eternal; the Word never had a beginning. Heis personal: with God means He enjoys intimate fellowship with the Father. Christ is divine, God in human flesh; the Word was God. He is the creator of the universe: in the beginning (Col. 1:16). By calling Jesus the Word, John emphasizes the Jesus is the revelation of God (Heb. 1:1).

1:6-8 | The John mentioned here is John the Baptist (Mal. 3:1). He was a reflector of the Light, preaching one single message of repentance to prepare the way for Christ. The purpose of John’s ministry was to bear witness to Jesus’ true identity (3:34).

1:9-11 | The Word evoked two responses. Some responded to Jesus’ ministry by receiving Him and believing in His name. Those who responded in this way were called God’s children. Sadly, others rejected Him, even the Jews (His own).

1:14 | The Word who was with God and who was God became flesh, a human being. In the OT, dwelling, tabernacle, and glory all refer to God taking up residence in the temple. Now God’s Son dwells with His people in the person of Jesus Christ.

1:17-18 | Jesus lived and spoke the truth: salvation is a grace-gift from God (Eph. 2:8-9). God could be seen through Jesus, the only begotten Son - a term referring to Jesus’ unique role as heir.
