I Never Knew You: Week 2
The Danger of Believing Without Surrender
Acts 5:12-21
12 Many signs and wonders were being done among the people through the hands of the apostles. They were all together in Solomon’s Colonnade. 13 No one else dared to join them, but the people spoke well of them. 14 Believers were added to the Lord in increasing numbers—multitudes of both men and women. 15 As a result, they would carry the sick out into the streets and lay them on cots and mats so that when Peter came by, at least his shadow might fall on some of them. 16 In addition, a multitude came together from the towns surrounding Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
17 Then the high priest rose up. He and all who were with him, who belonged to the party of the Sadducees, were filled with jealousy. 18 So they arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail. 19 But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple, and tell the people all about this life.” 21 Hearing this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
Bold obedience usually triggers opposition.
If you’re not ready to face opposition for your obedience, you’re not ready to live for God.
Bold obedience releases God’s Miracles.
Acts 5:19-21
19 But an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail during the night, brought them out, and said, 20 “Go and stand in the temple, and tell the people all about this life.” 21 Hearing this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach.
Many people are unable to live boldly for Jesus because they are living with a belief in Jesus instead of living with a surrender to Jesus.
Matthew 26:20-25
(20) “When evening came, he was reclining at the table with the Twelve. (21) While they were eating, he said, “Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me.” (22) Deeply distressed, each one of the disciples began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?” (23) He replied, “The one who dipped his hand with me in the bowl — he will betray me. (24) The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him, but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for him if he had not been born.” (25) Judas, his betrayer, replied, “Surely not I, Rabbi?” “You have said it, he told him.
You can believe, but without repentance and surrender, you’ll always go back to who you were before Jesus.
Matthew 7:21-23
(21) “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. (22) On that day MANY will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in your name, drive out demons in your name, and do many miracles in your name?’ (23) Then I will announce to them, ‘I never knew you. Depart from me, you lawbreakers!
John 3:36
(36) Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
If you have belief but don’t have repentance and obedience, then you have hell.
Galatians 2:20
(20) I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
If your life does not reflect the fruit of following Jesus, then you’re stupid to think that you’re actually following Jesus.
Repentance and surrender are important because it takes you from working for Jesus to walking with Jesus out of an overflow of your love for him.
