Colossians 3:20-21
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged.

The first

our faith in Christ matters is at home

The first

our faith in Christ impacts is our family

gospel > salvation > transformation > community >

Main Idea
The

greatly impacts the parent/child

Young children are to their parents

When a child respects his parent’s authority, they are respecting

of authority in other areas of life

Respect for authority is

in the

2 Timothy 3:1-5
But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

Ephesians 6:1-3
Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Adult children are to their parents

The command to obey

, but the command to honor

Deuteronomy 5:16
Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it may go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you.

Matthew 15:3-6
Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Jesus honored His

parents

Fathers must provide , leadership

Embitter - provoke, stir up, arouse to anger,

Discouraged - lose heart, disheartened, become despondent,

, spiritless

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

Matthew 3:17
This is my Son (

), whom I love ( ); with him I am well pleased ( )

Action Point

The first place we clothe ourselves with Christ everyday is in our home
(compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience)
